FRAGMENTS OF SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE 100

Spirit-lives are sensitive to thought formations and respond instinctively to such thought desires as reach their sphere or zone of life. The spirit-lives of the first spiritual zone are sufficiently near to the physical material world—in their vibratory correspondence—that they are influenced by every thought that is thought of them or about them.

When we persistently cling to our departed loved ones in our thought and will not let them go, we tend to retard them in their spiritual development and to hold them near to us. By so doing, we do them harm and produce a condition that is temporarily fatal either to their development or to our physical material existence.

When we retard the development of spirit-lives that are in the first spiritual zone by persistently holding them near to us through our thought, we produce a condition that tends to unhappiness and that finally results either in their breaking this tie that binds them or in their pulling us over to their side of life.

Why are there no secrets in the spiritual world?

There are no secrets in the spiritual world, for in the spiritual world all things are more nearly transparent, and thoughts, feelings, emotions and desires have form and shape and colour, and are perceivable by the spirit-life of the different spiritual zones.

To a superior intellect, there are no secrets in the physical material world, and to a spirit-life that has attained to a high state of spiritual development on the other side of life, all your secrets are revealed.

Benjamin F. Woodcox, Fragments of Spiritual Knowledge Pertaining to the Spiritual World, Woodcox & Fanner, Battle Creek, Michigan, 1923

Why is the approach to the spiritual world closely guarded?

The approach to the spiritual world is closely guarded—extremely so, as I have recently discovered—and when you are not in rapport with the higher spiritual entities, you are in extreme danger of coming in contact with spirit-lives of a much lower order, some of which have all the appearance of being demented.

I have recently, while in the midst of receiving beautiful thought impressions and information from the spiritual world, come suddenly in contact with malicious and evil influences and spirit-lives, and have been greatly frightened, and forced to draw back with all the caution of one who momentarily expects an attack.

And I would warn you—one and all—of the dangers of approaching the spiritual world—even if you are able to do so—until you have made long and special preparation, for there is danger here of a nature which you do not understand—and of which I am not able as yet to fully inform you.

FRAGMENTS OF SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE 97

There is the division of sex in the spiritual world and among the spiritual creatures who have come up from this earthland and from the other physical material worlds that dot the surface of the spiritual universe. And this division of sex is of a positive and negative nature, like electricity, and has to do with the generating of vitality, light, heat and various other things in connection with the life of a spirit-life and body.

The operation of this law of sex, which brings two spirit-lives together as positive and negative vital forces in life produces that condition known on this earthland as love or sex affinity with the exception that in the spiritual universe this love or sex affinity is free from the desire for personal touch, from passion, lust and all the other things that tend to mar love on this earthland of ours.

The selection and union in the spiritual world of positive and negative spirit-lives through the operation of sex affinity or love is brought about in part by the law of vibratory correspondence, which declares that only elements or lives attuned to the same number of vibrations per second can unite and become as one.

In the spiritual world and throughout the spiritual universe, as well as here in this earthland, there are sex and sex affinity and love between different spirit-lives and marriage and all that goes to make up a perfect union and happiness except that which must yet be attained through a higher state of spiritual development and a transportation to higher spiritual zones.

Fragments of Spiritual Knowledge Pertaining to the Spiritual World, Benjamin F. Woodcox, Woodcox & Fanner, Battle Creek, Michigan, 1923

Do spirit-lives foresee approaching events?

The spirit-lives of the first spiritual zone are able to foresee events that are approaching you, and can on occasions convey to you some inkling of their approach.

But these spirit-lives have no power to prevent the happening of that which is to be.

However, there are some exceptions to this rule.

Much depends upon whether that which is to happen to you is the result of the violation of some of nature's laws, or whether the danger that is approaching is coming from a source that is outside you and within the realm of the merely chance happenings of life.

In the latter case, you may be saved if you receive the warning in time and act upon it.

Benjamin F. Woodcox, Fragments of Spiritual Knowledge Pertaining to the Spiritual World, Woodcox & Fanner, Battle Creek, Michigan, 1923

What are the sorrow-loving spiritual entities?

There are spirit-lives in the first spiritual zone that have a morbid desire and curiosity to witness human sorrow, suffering, and even tragedy and death, and these diseased spirit-lives are often found in homes of sorrow and tragedy, and in homes toward which these evils are approaching.

I have on a number of occasions observed one or more of these spirit-lives in homes of sorrow, and have—on a number of other occasions—been able even to foresee the approach of a tragedy within a home by having observed the presence of one or more of these spirit-lives.

Yet I do not fully understand these lives.

However, I know that they are earthbound spirits of a very low order who, in their former life, committed some peculiarly atrocious crime or caused great human suffering to someone, and who, therefore, have a morbid curiosity to study the things that caused their downfall and delayed them in their spiritual development.

These sorrow-loving or morbidly-curious spirit-lives of the first spiritual zone—or rather those that I have had an occasion to observe—were quiet, silent, unobtrusive, dark and brooding spiritual entities, clothed in raiment of the darker shades, resembling black and brown intermingled.

Benjamin F. Woodcox, Fragments of Spiritual Knowledge Pertaining to the Spiritual World, Woodcox & Fanner, Battle Creek, Michigan, 1923

All life enters into the first spititual zone.

All life—when it leaves its physical material abode at death—whether it be of the mineral, vegetable or animal kingdom—enters into the first spiritual zone—there to await its reincarnation in some other physical material form accordant with the laws of nature.

The first spiritual zone is so nearly earth-like in appearance—due to the presence of all kinds of disembodied life—that some spirit-lives are not at first conscious that they have passed over into a new world of life.

In the first spiritual zone, there is mineral life—as natural as that of the mineral in the physical material world—and vegetable life—and the life of all the different animals, including that of man.

The first spiritual zone is largely a receiving zone for earthbound life, though there is much life here that has attained to a sufficient vitality, strength and spiritual development to proceed upward toward and into the second spiritual zone.

Benjamin F. Woodcox, Fragments of Spiritual Knowledge Pertaining to the Spiritual World, Woodcox & Fanner, Battle Creek, Michigan, 1923

How do all things come to you?

All things come to you by a slow awakening—by a transcending of yourself—an unfolding—a coming out of yourself into a knowledge of yourself and life.

And if you suddenly become conscious of some truth, it is not that the truth has come to you suddenly, but that you have suddenly become aware of its presence.

Many truths that are plainly visible within the horizon of your present spiritual development are still unobserved by you, and any of these truths may suddenly be discovered by you or revealed to you by the invisible and spiritual life with which you are surrounded.

Why are messages from 100-plus spirit-lives seldom received?

You seldom receive messages from spirit-lives that departed this earth-life a hundred or more years ago because all such spirit-lives have either again returned to earth to complete their evolution or have attained to a point in the spiritual world from which they are not likely to communicate with you.

Benjamin F. Woodcox, Fragments of Spiritual Knowledge Pertaining to the Spiritual World, Woodcox & Fanner, Battle Creek, Michigan, 1923

How does the spirit-life perceive?

The senses of those of the spiritual world have a wide and ever-widening range of perception; a sense of perception that includes the physical—coarser, and, therefore, slowly-vibrating materials of the lower worlds—as well as those of the higher and spiritual worlds from which they are a part.

But this sense of perception does not exceed that of the height to which the spirit-life has attained in its spiritual development, and is, therefore, limited on the upward rather than on the downward scale.

While a disembodied spirit-life sees spirits, as a spirit, yet it is also conscious of the coarser, and, therefore, physical body, and is not deceived as to which world of life you belong, or as to the world in which you are, for the moment, to be found.

The spirit-lives of the spiritual worlds are able to get in touch with the physical world and to receive from the physical world such information as they may desire, yet their interests are no longer of the physical world, and what interests they may have had, grow less, as they evolve higher and higher in the scale of spiritual development and advance further and further into the realms of the spiritual worlds.

Benjamin F. Woodcox, Fragments of Spiritual Knowledge Pertaining to the Spiritual World, Woodcox & Fanner, Battle Creek, Michigan, 1923

There are many things that are inexpressible.

There are many things that are inexpressible.

Especially is this true when that which you wish to express is beyond the experience of living men.

In the spiritual world, Humanitas has not passed beyond the first spiritual zone—or that zone in which he has frequently been cast by death—and does not know what is beyond.

He who is able to get into rapport and communication with the second spiritual zone of the spiritual world is confronted with many things that he does not understand—that have not entered into any of the experiences of his former lives, and, therefore, are inexpressible.

Communication with the second and higher spiritual zones is not all that is necessary.

You must be able to grasp—to understand—to translate—and express—in human language—that which an attempt is being made to communicate to you.

In this, you cannot succeed entirely at first, and only after prolonged efforts and repeated failures can you succeed at all.

In order that you may get in communication with the second and higher spiritual zones, it is necessary that you have completed your spiritual development in human form and are in vibratory rapport with the second and higher spiritual zones.

Having passed to physical completion and entered into rapport and communication with the second and higher spiritual zones, you find yourself in a world of which you know nothing—a world that is governed by many laws, which are new to you.

The laws of the second and higher spiritual zones, however, are not all new because some of these laws are but the continuation of laws, which you have known on this earth plane and it is because of these laws, which you have known, that you are able to eventually understand.

Having grasped a limited knowledge of the second and higher spiritual zones through the laws of which you know, you proceed to study these laws in connection with the other laws of which you know nothing, and succeed in grasping an idea of them.

In this way, you advance slowly—but surely—upward, and eventually arrive at an ability to understand—and to express—and even to convey to those who as yet know nothing—some faint, though doubtless imperfect idea, of the second and higher spiritual zones.

Benjamin F. Woodcox, Fragments of Spiritual Knowledge Pertaining to the Spiritual World, Woodcox & Fanner, Battle Creek, Michigan, 1923

How do higher spiritual communications arrive?

Spiritual communications arriving from the higher spiritual zones reach you clairaudiently.

Those from the lower spiritual zones reach you clairvoyantly. In other words, communications coming from the higher spiritual zones reach you, as though spoken to you, and those from the lower zones reach you, as symbols and pictures, which are made manifest to you through the spiritual sense of sight.

Benjamin F. Woodcox, Fragments of Spiritual Knowledge Pertaining to the Spiritual World, Woodcox & Fanner, Battle Creek, Michigan, 1923

What are human-receiving stations?

The human intellect is capable of receiving communications from the first spiritual zone only.

All spiritual communications from the higher spiritual zones must be received by the spirit-life direct—and be transmitted by it to the intellect.

Spirit-lives that are highly developed may receive direct spiritual communications coming from the second and third spiritual zones, but from beyond the third zone, they cannot.

They must depend for further information upon relayed messages, that is, upon messages that have been received by at least one or more spiritual entities while en route, and have been re-transmitted by these entities until they have come into vibratory harmony with some human receiving station or life.

Benjamin F. Woodcox, Fragments of Spiritual Knowledge Pertaining to the Spiritual World, Woodcox & Fanner, Battle Creek, Michigan, 1923

What is apt to translate rapidly-vibrating knowledge?

While the spirit-life depends largely upon the physical brain to receive and transmit impressions for it—yet this life has the ability to receive and transmit impressions and knowledge independent of the physical brain.

When the spirit-life is especially highly-developed, its ability to receive and transmit impressions and knowledge—independent of the physical brain—reaches a point that is truly remarkable—and far beyond the ability of any of your physical organs.

The spirit-life canand doesreceive impressions and knowledge that are keyed to a higher rate of vibration than that of which the physical intellect is capable.

It canand doesmount far above the physical intellect, in its ability to grasp and to translate rapidly-vibrating spiritual impressions, communications and knowledge.

It is in the higher rates of vibration per second that the spirit-life is especially apt and able to transcend that of the physical intellect.

The ability of the spirit-life to receive and to translate rapidly-vibrating spiritual impressions and knowledge is limited only to the height that it has attained in its developmentand, in any casetranscends that of the physical mind many times.

Benjamin F. Woodcox, Fragments of Spiritual Knowledge Pertaining to the Spiritual World, Woodcox & Fanner, Battle Creek, Michigan, 1923

In the beginning, God alone existed.

In the beginning, there were no angels in the higher heavens.

No higher heavens existed.

All had to be created, evolved and perfected.

The angels are merely spirit-lives that have completed their evolution and attained to perfection in the usual way, having traversed all the physical material kingdoms and species of life up to—and including man—and having passed through all the spiritual zones this side of the higher heavens.

In the beginning, God alone existed.

Of the source of his existence, He knew nothing, save that He came to consciousness out in the great silence of space.

He—at once—conceived the idea of creating a universe out of the materials that were all about him—materials to you invisible.

God's original conception of a universe was very different from the universe that now exists because His idea grew, as he continued to think upon it and to build it.

Even yet the idea is not complete but is continuing to grow, evolve and change.

Are there colour lines in the spiritual world?

In the spiritual world, there are no races, nationalities, nor colour lines.

Yet, in the spiritual universe, as well as in the physical material worlds, there is a very wide range of differently developed spirit-lives and bodies, owing to the point that each has attained in its development.

The higher, in the scale of spiritual development, a spirit-life is, the more beautiful does it become, and the nearer does it approach to the likeness of its Creator.

It would be impossible to convey to an earthbound creature even the slightest conception of the beauty of a spirit-life that is approaching completion on any of the higher spiritual planes.

The brilliancy of the light emitted from the spirit body of a highly developed spirit-life would prevent a human from approaching sufficiently close to behold or to form an exact idea of the beauty of such a being.

The World of Consequences!

Since the word hell seems to have become objectionable with well-bred people, let me suggest their calling this place The World of Consequences!

Letters from Hell, L. W. J. S., Richard Bentley & Son, London, 1889

All is cause and effect

All is cause and effect, past act and consequence.

Recognise the oneness of everything

Recognise the oneness of everything.

O. Henry's Tussle with the Devil

It was the hour when souls simply cling to their bodies by the merest thread when I met His Satanic Majesty.

He is well-named, for he is majestic, in every sense of the word, majestic of mien, majestic of gesture, of expression and a god to look upon.

He is a deceptive person, for one meeting him casually would think he was one of the great and good men of the day—abroad on errands of mercy and with kindness in his heart for all humanity. So carefully does he conceal his identity that he resembles most of mankind who are one person to themselves and quite another to the world of men.

We met. He knew me, but I had not yet had the pleasure of knowing this majestic lord—or thought I had not—and so was flattered when he accosted me and made me welcome.

I was told you were coming, and so came to meet you, he said, with a smile of geniality. We hoped to have greeted you earlier.

Just a minute, I said. Who are you? Who told you I was coming?

Making a sweeping gesture and ignoring my questions, he continued

Our land is fair—as you see—but there are many wonders, which I desire to show you. Wonders, which are unheard of—not even dreamt of—and which will make you desire to remain among us, I feel confident.

With this, my arm was taken in a friendly fashion and we proceeded up an avenue lined with trees perfect in form and foliage—passed handsome houses with playing fountains, flowers and birds in abundance.

With a magnificent gesture, he swept all this out of the way. The homes of our servants. We enter now the domains of those who rule and where we hope you will abide.

The turn of the street brought us to an estate situated on the crest of a magnificent mountain. Winding roads of dazzling whiteness and smoothness led through a garden of flowers and wonderful trees. Running streams made music and the song of birds—with brilliant plumage.

With no word spoken—but many implied by gesture and nod—we reached the mansion. Transparent, the walls seemed, the air heavy with perfume. It was a palace of dreams, resting in the hollow of my hand.

With a smile of winning sweetness, he said

This is yours. Will you rest?

Mine! For what? I exclaimed.

Do you give palaces like this to all your visitors?

Not to all, he answered; only to our favoured ones.

Why am I so favoured, then? What have I done to bring me this?

Nothing, he answered, as yet, but we have hopes of great things from you. We expect you will be of great benefit to us; will aid us in promoting our cause.

And how? I queried.

Come, let us sit and sup and we will talk it over.

Leading me gently forward, we entered a banqueting hall, where costly viands and sparkling wines reposed among flowers, and gold and silver, and ruby and diamond, sapphire and emerald decked each goblet—while behind our places were fair women who smiled and breathed perfume upon the air.

Too dazed to remonstrate, I took my place and unconscious of what I did, sipped my wine from its jewelled goblet.

Lifting his wine, he saidTo our better acquaintance—our Brotherhood, I hope.

To our better acquaintance, certainly—but what do you mean by Brotherhood?

That I will explain. In this mountain fastness, there is a secret abode, which only the elect can enter and where the members set in motion great events and accomplish great deeds. We have need of one like you to assist us.

What do you feel I can do? I asked. My talents are slight. I do not comprehend my selection.

Ah; that is not to be wondered at for you have not correctly gauged your talents and ability.

Do you realise that you have the greatest talent ever known—in one direction?

What! I gasped.

Quite true! I will tell you.

In the beginning, you were presented by lesser gods with a talent for the love of everything, with love for the pure, for the truth, for the beautiful. You aspired to be one of the unknown workers for humanity—to create beauty, in poem and song; to weave for them music which would make life an ecstasy.

To scatter happiness was your ambition. Jealousy was unknown to you, and envy was a word you never even thought of.

Kindness was your password in the realm from which you came, but we, who were observing you, recognised a power much greater than you knew—a power to work results magical in their effect— and so we came near you and sought to make your better acquaintance.

You were a shy bird, difficult to catch, however, and it took us many aeons of time before we finally won your confidence.

What was this great ability? I interrupted.

You wish to know? That is well, for I see we shall be able to work more harmoniously if your interest is aroused, he replied. I will tell you. It was—but why should I say it was, rather, it is still the great gift you possess and which we desire to have you give to us in all its fullness. Let us review a bit what use you made of it.

First, you were disappointed in the love of the woman whom you desired, and so began its development—until love for man or woman had no place in your heart.

Then commenced your clear vision, which showed you the evil which was in all minds and hearts and you recognised no one could be trusted. Ultimately, you nearly perfected that branch of your gift and so had an honoured seat at our council table, and we desire you again to take your place at its head.

But why? I interrupted, did I lose that exalted seat?

Alas; he answered, you went back to your old habits. An animal was the cause of your downfall—a mongrel cur!

You interest me, I said. Explain how that occurred.

You were in a forsaken village, having lost your way and wandered there, and without food. Little by little, your strength left you and you lay down under a tree, with all hope abandoned. A rustle in the dead grass aroused you and presently a tiny, mangy dog crept up and licked your hand.

The relief from the loneliness was so great that you foolishly took the cur in your arms.

Foolishly! I exclaimed.

Yes, foolishly, for that was the beginning of your loss of power. True, the animal led you out to safety and warmth, eventually. But what a seed was sown!

Where before the harvest was well-nigh perfect, it now had the weeds of Pity and Gratitude. So do the mighty fall!

That was a fatal sowing and reaping for you, for it even affected your view of men. You commenced seeing in them bits of character before unseen. Such useless things as Consideration, Love and Pity!

Your habits, too, were affected by this poisonous weed. Where before you had been perfect in all ways vile, you now commenced to give up some of the most brilliant jewels—betrayal of women—the excitement and joy of perfect and exhilarating wines. Why! you even went so low as to prefer sparkling waters from Nature's sources.

Holding my jewelled goblet high, I laughed and saidTo what depths can man sink!

Ah! I rejoice to see you agree with me. It is well. We shall succeed together admirably, I feel sure, he made answer.

Then, drawing closer to me, Now to our desires and agreement.

By all means, I replied. I am eager to hear your plan. For, certainly, if this domain is part of the reward, it interests me.

Good! That is better, he replied.

When you first left our abode and joined with others, who had contrary beliefs, we felt it was final— but as we watched and studied your soul—for you know, of course, souls are clearly visible to us— and saw there was within it, still, the desire to continue as one of us, I was given the task of keeping alive that seed, and adding to its force, so that in time a bountiful harvest might repay us.

We feel that time has arrived.

As I told you, this palace, with all it contains, its vault of priceless gems—such as are on your goblet, these fair women, and hundreds like them, are yours. Any honour you feel you desire shall be granted, and you shall be the lord of whatsoever you desire to possess.

At this, I glanced around the hall.

Looked at the smiling faces—slender, voluptuous forms—at the sparkling gems—at the vista which was spread before me through the open windows—and then I mused upon what I could possess in addition—all honours whatsoever I desired. Coming back, finally, to a study of His Majesty's face, I found his eyes fixed upon me.

Will you accept? he asked.

That is a little mystery, too, of yours, is it not? You ask if I will accept all that counts in the world, but you have not yet told me what I am to do for it all. Tell me that side of the mystery, I replied.

Only a simple thing!

Renew your association with us and take the leadership of the band which is ready to go forth and sow broadcast the seeds which are so much craved by the world. The seeds of Hate, of Malice, of Licentiousness, of Cruelty.

Help us to rid the world of gaiety which is simple and wholesome. Help us to give them a greater excitement. Let us arouse the idea of hunting within their breasts—but children for game—not birds, which are only beautiful and give song, that would be tame sport!

Take the lead and aid us to sow Revenge broadcast.

Is that all? I queried.

All for the present, he answered.

Later, new things can be brought to a successful issue, if you desire. But that will satisfy our Brotherhood for the present.

Let us drink to our unity, he said, raising high his glass and looking with flashing eyes into mine.

I rose to my feet, goblet high.

To our Brotherhood! I shouted;

May it be annihilated forever!
