Unselfishness in the spiritual sphere means conforming to the divine will from the highest motives, which is the desire to do well in the spirit of obedient subjects.
There is no higher motive for any action than the desire to follow the divine commands, and the first of all those commands is to love others in place of self.
The wisdom of an action depends always on its motive, for the most perfect life if lived for self is no use in making character.
Motive determines all things.
