What is one of the worst possible crimes?

Hospitals!

I thought you said there was no pain here.

You said it was left on the threshold of Hell.

Nor is there any pain.

Some spirits come here whose minds have been long-clouded and these need treatment.

Mental cases are roughly divided into idiots and lunatics.

The latter fall into three divisions—

1. Lunacy caused by physical defects either early
or late in life

2. Lunacy caused by evil passions
or an evil life

3. Lunacy caused by religious mania and lack of balance, and such kindred mental disturbances, for example, excessive sorrow.

If the cause is some physical defect, the individual comes here ignorant and in need of teaching.

The less knowledge these spirit-lives possess, the lower they will start.

If they have no knowledge of God and a future life, they will be taught in special schools in the topmost division of Hell.

Spirit-lives who have acquired some knowledge of God and a future life may come to them.

This group owes its mental difficulty to some physical,
not spiritual defect.

Once clear of the physical defect, they need teaching, but not medical treatment in any form.

In the second group, the lunatic afflicted in early life will go to the elementary schools in the seventh division of Hell.

Those who had attained some spiritual development before insanity occurred will enter their realm and go to the secondary schools.

In all likelihood, they will not have had time to commit sins for which they will have to undergo penance.

Those afflicted later in life will have had time alike to acquire knowledge and faith, and some time to do evil, for which they will have to suffer.

Their spiritual development will be that which they had reached when the insanity came on them.

Many so-called lunatics, even when lunacy is due solely to a physical defect
or injury are not completely lacking in responsibility for their deeds.

Often, only part of the brain is affected, and they may appear normal except on one
or two points.

These shades of insanity are settled automatically.

The spirit-life feels no remorse for offences it had no intention of committing, and for which it cannot be responsible.

It regrets any evil that may have been caused by its inability to control its body, just as a motorist would grieve if he lost control of his car and hurt someone, but that would not be the sense of moral guilt, which would attach to him if the accident were due to his reckless driving.

This type of lunatic takes up his education at the point at which the accident occurred, which deprived him of his reason.

He will suffer for his misdeeds up to that point so far as he was responsible.

Mental treatment will not be necessary in these cases, merely education.

Many so-called maniacs are really unfortunate beings who are obsessed by other spirits.

The unfortunate man is not responsible directly for the crimes committed by these through the maniac’s physical organism.

He may have to suffer indirectly, as it was his evil life that allowed an evil spirit to take control.

When the responsibility goes so far as invoking evil spirits to aid him in his nefarious purposes, the moral guilt is tremendous.

This is one of the worst crimes possible and mental derangement is the start of retribution.

Spirit-lives who suffer lunacy caused by an evil lifeor passions go to Hell.

It is these latter who need treatment in their hospitals, and ordinary education.

Spiritual pride and even commonplace conceit are potent factors for rendering people insane as well as the more obvious vices, such as drink and lust.

Religious mania is often very difficult to eliminate.

They come to the hospital in their realm and remain there until the religious mania and its attendant evils have been eradicated.

One of their chief objects is to divert patients’ minds from concentrating too much on themselves.

Many were very selfishor self-centred folk.

Religious mania
or excessive grief is the cause of many of these cases being here.

Wholesome and soothing amusements, which dispel the morbid trait in their characters are of great value.
