How to practice right understanding?

Right understanding prepares the way to hear all things. 

The sin of error must be overcome or it remains a thorn, but when promptly met and subdued, it falls harmless at our feet, a conquered enemy. 

When allowed to retain its hold and we evade it by avoiding its contact, it is still unsubdued, remaining as a thorn, which we guard against for fear of feeling its sting. 

But when levelled to the ground by the power of understanding, it becomes submissive, yielding perfectly to our control and its power and growth no longer retain a hold as an annoyance or something to be shunned.
