Does Jesus show up in history?

Why is there no historical record of Christ?

His mission was not to the material world, and he did not will that they should have any part in bringing him to the knowledge of mankind. His mission was spiritual, and the spirit of each man must perceive him for himself. 

Is it not wonderful that a man historically unknown should have made the most lasting and permanent mark of any that ever existed?
