During the Dark Ages, in the times of martyrdom and inquisition, earthbound spirits were nearly as barbarous as the savages and cannibals. The horrid vision related by Dante, and the pictures by mediaeval monks and inspired painters, representing the tortures of the damned souls were drawn from partially clairvoyant visions of the condition of spirits who passed from earth in the midst of rapine and murder and the innumerable cruelties of that age, fertile in inventions for producing pain and anguish.
