In the position of the “angels of the churches,” spoken of by John. They were those who had passed over from our world into the next, but had not yet reached that higher state where the Master was at that time.

Still imperfect, full of faults, yet striving to grow towards perfection, they were aiding their brethren on earth as far as they could.
